The second staff is a compilation of song lyrics. In order, the tracks quoted are: “Door” by Caroline Polachek, “Bambi” by Baekhyun (in translation), “Insomnies” by Angèle (also in translation), “Heat Lightning” by Mitski, “Too Much Color” by Foxes, “Dover Beach” by Baby Queen, “Well Rested” by Kero Kero Bonito, “All Too Well” by Taylor Swift, and “I Know Alone” by Haim. The Angèle song, “Insomnia” by Yukika, and “Insomnia” by Caroline Polachek also influenced some imagery on the first staff. The closing line (“But it’s not enough…”) is a slightly altered lyric from the latter track.

KAYLA BEARDSLEE loves thinking about how the idiosyncrasies of pop music, pop culture, and personal listening choices can be translated into poetry. She lives in Massachusetts, graduated from Hamilton College last year with a degree in Creative Writing, and writes about pop music at popexcellence.wordpress.com.

///

To me, being “kaleidoscoped” means not being content with something you find interesting—a topic, a performance, your sense of identity, etc.—until you can understand how it works on many different levels simultaneously.

///

The first and third lines in each grouping of staffs in “Insomnia” are my own words, while the second line is a collage of other artists’ lyrics, many of which have run through my head as I’m struggling to fall asleep. Sometimes even our favorite songs can haunt us in unwanted ways.
